Cornelius Tops at Dunlop

With many of the top players playing in the U.S. the weekend of June 2-3, a new winner was crowned on the Canadian 30K Tour. George Cornelius went undefeated through the 28-player field at Dunlop billiards in Barrie, ONT.
On the top bracket of the A side Cornelius rolled through Brian Bedford, Marvin Catindig, Dave McMahon, and defeated Kory Jacobs 7-1 to get a chance to play for the hot seat. Youngster Jeff Robson cruised through the bottom of the A side, getting a bye first, then defeating Jarret
White, Tony Butera, and then taking out Glen Lee 5-3. The battle for the hot seat was a decisive one as Cornelius defeated Robson 8-3, sending him to the one-loss side to grind it out.
On the one-loss side Randy Fawcett defeated Glen Lee 6-3, while Wayne Tate matched up with Kory Jacobs 5 and prevailed to go one more round. He stumbled against Randy Fawcett, though, with the match going double-hill before Fawcett prevailed.
Fawcett advanced then to play against Robson, taking the match with a 6-0 drubbing. But he was unprepared for Cornelius in the finals. Though it was a close match at first, Cornelius kicked it into high gear and made quick work of Fawcett, defeating him 8-4.

Undefeated 30K Tour Victory for Hjorliefson

Thirty-two die-hard pool players gave up the sunny skies for a chance to compete in the 34th stop of the Canadian 30K Tour at Bigwigs May 19-20. Frequent winner Erik Hjorliefson went home with the first-place prize.
Hjorliefson went undefeated through the winners’ side, making quick work of Ken Botham 10-2 for the hot seat. On the one-loss side Jeff Dick finished in fifth place, being eliminated by up-and-coming 14-year-old Jeff Robson. Mike Leigh ended up in the same position when he fell 7-3 to George Cornelius, who was on fire.
Robson took an early lead 3-1 in the quarterfinals over his opponent, but Cornelius turned up the heat and defeated the youngster 8-4. Now playing like a man possessed, Cornelius quickly dispatched Botham 7-4 to advance to the finals. However, Hjorleifson ended Cornelius’ run 10-2, going undefeated.

Young Gun Morra Wins Again

A week after winning the big Stan James billiard event in Toronto, John Morra was triumphant once again, winning the May 5-6 stop of the Canadian 30K Tour. This stop was hosted by Shooters billiards in Scarborough, ONT, once again featuring some of the finest players in the country.
Morra went undefeated through the winners’ side of the chart, sending Mike Patrowicz to grind it out on the one-loss side after besting him for the hot seat. Meanwhile, Jason Klatt recovered from a third-round loss to work his way to the finals to meet Morra there.
The finals were action-packed, with Morra taking an early 4-0 lead. But Klatt, unwilling to fold up, bore down and came back to tie the score. The match went game for game after that, until at hill-hill Klatt made good and won the first set. The second set was identical to the first, with one small adjustment: Morra came out the triumphant 9-8 winner.

30K Canadian Tour Win for Gardiner

Dunlop billiards in Barrie, ONT, played hosted to the April 29 stop of the Canadian 30K Tour. Out of the 22 participating players, Darlene Gardiner took top honors over Kory Jacobs.
Jacobs eked past John Black double-hill in the quarterfinals to go on to the next match against Jeff Dick. After besting Dick 4-2, Jacobs advanced to the finals against Gardiner. In the true double-elimination format, Jacobs was able to score the first set 6-3 but lost the 9 ball in the hill-hill second set, handing Gardiner the win.

Dedicated billiard Victory for Hjorliefson

Frequent winner Erik Hjorliefson went undefeated at the April 14-15 stop of the Canadian 30K Tour. Hosted by Bigwig billiards in Newmarket, ONT, this event attracted 40 players vying for the first-place prize.
On Sunday, Hjorliefson steamrolled over Dennis Rhodes, defeating him 10-2 and sending him to the one-loss side grind. On the bottom half of the winners’-side bracket, 14-year-old Jeff Robson bested Rob Brandenburg 5-8 in an exciting double-hill match. The battle for the hot seat was a one-man show, as Hjorliefson took over and defeated Robson 10-1.
On the top of the one-loss side, Dennis Rhodes bested Brian McDougal in another double-hill match 7-7. Also, Jason Klatt made quick work of Brandenburg 9-3 to win the bottom bracket of the one-loss side. Never letting up, Klatt trounced Rhodes 10-2 and stampeded Robson 10-1.
The stage was set for the final scene. Hjorleifson started out slow but then kicked it into high gear, never really letting Klatt into the action. Erik won the match 9-4, dedicating this win to his grandmother, who recently passed away.
